Hi everyone, welcome to the week 3 blog!

This Wednesday we started off the week by returning to the Yarra youth centre where we met Ror to do a hip hop writing session. He showed us all some of his own music and explained how to start writing song lyrics. All the students voted on a backup track and then got started on writing! They then all had the chance to record their own lyrics to the chosen backing track. The overall song they created was awesome and it was great to see all of the ideas they came up with!

After finishing up the song we headed into Bunnings to meet Triss, we all got a tour of bunnings and learnt all about the different sections. The students then had the opportunity to choose and learn how to mix their own paint colour for the bird house they were going to make. We then went and made our birdhouses and got to painting! All of them look great and will be donated to Collingwood children’s farm!

On Thursday we had a great day of canoeing! We met at Collingwood station and headed down to the Yarra bend park to start our trip. The students showed amazing teamwork carrying the canoes together down to the river! We all learnt the basics of canoeing and then headed off. We went all the way down the Yarra River to the Fairfield boathouse. Everyone showed such great teamwork with their partners and completed the trip in such great time! We all enjoyed the beautiful views of the river and all the sleeping bats in the trees. We then ate our lunches on the bank of Fairfield boat house and had a relaxing trip back.

To finish up the week we headed off to South Melbourne lifesaving club and met Alistair who is a lifeguard there. He gave us a great tour of the lifesaving club and all the equipment they use such as the medic room and the watch tower.

Alistair then went through how to do CPR and how to use a defibrillator. The students then got a chance to practise CPR and use the practise defibrillator on the dolls! Everyone learnt so much about first aid and everything that is done in emergency situations.

The students then had the opportunity to paddle around on the rescue boards. We all learnt so much and had a great time learning and preparing for our surf camp next week!

This week we have two student interviews to catch up from last week.

Firstly, we have Olivia from Collingwood college with her interview from week 2.

Olivia’s ’s overall highlight of the week was doing the seeing the view at Stevensons falls. This week Olivia found getting to the top of Ned’s Peak the most challenging. And she is most looking forward to surf camp!

And for our week 3 interview we have Jade from Fitzroy high.

Jade’s overall highlight of the week was canoeing as she had done it before and really likes it. This week Jade found the hip hop writing and the recording the most challenging. And she is most looking forward to boxing and getting in the ring again!
