Term 1 Week 3 2021

Hello everyone!

On Wednesday we had Tamika from headspace Glenroy come join us at Oxygen and talk with us about Mental Health Awareness. We spoke about what is mental health and mental illness and ways we can recognise it and deal with it. headspace is a National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing mental health services to 12-25 year olds and they have more than 100 centres throughout Australia. It is paramount to discuss such a topic and break down the stigma surrounding mental illness. We want to provide the best support possible to our young people and give them the tools to seek support if ever needed.

In the afternoon we went to the Coburg Leisure Centre for a gym session. We spent the first 10 minutes warming up and then did a circuit training workout. It was so good to get the body moving the heart rate pumping! We spoke about the benefits of maintaining a good fitness level and how we can utilise our community centres with ease. The young people did really well in participating and putting in effort. Watch out for our abs! :)

On Thursday we had Joe Motley join us at Oxygen for the entire day. Motely is a very talented artist that creates music beats and writes raps. He showcased his work and his passion and what was great to see was the students being 100% engaged. He inspired the young people to write their own rap and individually they spent time in the studio to record it. All raps were compiled together to create their group's rap/song. We were very impressed with not only the rap itself but also the creativity, determination and passion they put into it! Well done everyone!

Today (Friday) we went to the South Melbourne Life Saving Club and spent the morning learning what to do in an emergency situation, how to effectively perform CPR and how to read and give signals on the water. Each student will receive a certificate of participation for their CPR introduction which will be great to put on their CVs. After lunch the young people geared up to go into the ocean where they practiced being on a rescue board, learnt different ways to paddle and industry standard rescue techniques. This was a great day and we are feeling more confident about our Surf Camp next week!
