NILLUMBIK TERM 4 2024 WEEK 3

Hi all,

Here is the Week 3 Blog,

The activities we completed this week were:

Gym / Street art

The amazing race scavenger hunt

Surf life saving

On Wednesday we started off in the gym with our instructor Brad and students were able to use all the equipment and go through their set programs. We also played some intense games of basketball! Students then participated in Street art over at Jets Studio, Banyule Youth Services, where we met Sebastian who showed us some great techniques with spray cans. The crew drew some designs on paper and then went in to the lane where they could have a go replicate their art on the walls. There were some fantastic efforts and great enthusiasm to take on Seb’s tips getting the desired effects. Zarah, Coda and Declan created some impressive designs as seen in the photos. Thanks to Jets studio for having us and allowing us to be creative.

On Thursday the 31st we did a brief pack up of our camp gear from the week before and then begun practicing some bike riding in preparation for our final camp in a few weeks. Students completed some riding around the gym doing different drills and games to test their skills, balance and control. After this we headed into the city to complete Operation Newstart's version of the Amazing Race. Before getting started we visited Hosier lane and culture kings, meeting a famous magician who performed some magic tricks for the students!

We then begun a girls vs boys competition and split into 2 groups for the Amazing Race. Students had a list of 30 questions to answer and win points by following a grid of the CBD and finding the answers at certain locations around the city, they also had to take photos of answers and ask expert guides for hints. It was a great effort from both groups, with everyone being super engaged and determined to win. The girls came out on top today but it was super close! We finished up with some lunch a Melbourne central before dismissing students.

On Friday, we participated in surf lifesaving to prepare students for the surf camp the following week. We headed off to South Melbourne Lifesaving Club were Matt, one of the local members took students on a tour of the club, including the first aid room, the lifeguard tour and all the equipment. We had a presentation about the club and the events they hold, and then went into learning about how to administer CPR with 'DRSABCD' and students practiced on CPR dummies, also learning how to properly use a defibrillator. Matt also taught us the different water signal signs to help students if they're in trouble while swimming which was super informative leading into summer!

We then headed off into the water to practice our surf lifesaving skills. Students hopped on life saving boards and practiced catching waves into the shore. Despite the cold weather all students jumped in the water and gave it a go which was awesome to see, we hope students felt a bit more prepared for the surf camp the next week!
