Hello everyone welcome back to the blog!
Let’s take a dive to Wednesday, after another fun and proactive gym session with Brad, we made our way to Edendale Community Farm. We were able meet Hans who has worked at Edendale farm for many years after being a youth worker and would be taking them around the farm we had great time as he showed us a tour and all the work that gets out put into the farm. We were privileged enough to see a baby lama that was only one day old as well as feed a lamb who drank the bottle in just 10 seconds. As much fun as this was our main purpose was to give a hand to the Edendale farm, we started refreshing the garden beds around the farm, working in pairs, we used wheelbarrows to move mulch around and cleaned out the chicken coop. This was great everyone put a team effort in achieving this. After the hard work was done we were then able to have some time with the baby goats, building them a little obstacle course and getting lots of cuddles which was hard to say our goodbyes.
On Thursday, we headed off down the coast towards Bancoora Surf Lifesaving club. Once we arrived, we settled into our accommodation, had some lunch and gathered around for a debrief, introducing the 4 p’s (perseverance, participation, patience, and positivity) that students will work on throughout the camp. Once we had our wetsuits on, we headed down the beach, we met Kev our surfing instructor. We began with the basics of surfing with our boards on the sand. We gained an idea and built our confidence on catching a wave, we then spent the next 2 hours catching wave after wave with students all picking up the skills instantly and doing an awesome job, this was a really awesome experience to see everyone giving it a go. We shared many laughs over lots of wipeouts but were blessed with some nice weather for the day. After our lessons we made our way into Torquay for some chips and potato cakes watching the surf at the famous Bells beach. We had a delicious BBQ for dinner cooked and prepared by the whole group and enjoyed some pool and dessert before heading off the bed.
Friday was just as jampacked as the first, with an early wake up and 8:30am surf lesson in Torquay. We met with Kev again, got in our wetsuits and hit the sand straight away, after a refresher on the basic’s students were straight in the water, catching and standing up on waves instantly! A few broke off for a nice swim in the waves before we packed up and headed back to Bancoora. The crew did a great job with cleaning the surf club at and we finished off our camp with a nice lunch.
What a great camp! Students learnt all about the 4 p’s of surfing, using perseverance, participation, patience, and positivity to help them get through a new challenging activity. Students also explored how they can reflect these in a classroom. We’re over halfway through and the term is absolutely flying by. Well done to each student for giving this camp their absolute best go and gaining some awesome new skills along the way, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we need, we definitely have some potential pro surfers in the mix!
