HUME WEEK 6 TERM 4
Hello everyone!
Well another successfully completed week and what a week it was!
On Wednesday the 9th we started the day at Collingwood, a change of location for a very important workshop, HipHop writing! With the aid of ROR a local resident hiphop artist down at the Yarra Youth Centre. He took us through this very creative and expressive outlet, giving tips and letting everyone go with their own flow. This activity engages the young people to find other avenues of expression and tap in on creative talents they might never otherwise have found. After having a go at writing some of the crew even found their footing and performed their pieces, creating a little rap amalgamation of our own. Once done we headed down to Maribyrnong, to have our second boxing session. With the aid of Sal, our experienced boxing instructor, we set forth to focus on our bodies and our mindsets, some even have a few rounds with him themselves. Overall it was a great way to prepare ourselves for the camp we had the next day.
On Thursday the 10th we collected bright and early for our Surf Camp down at Bancoora Beach in Breamlea. Bancoora Surf Life Saving Club is a space we as Operation Newstart have used for many years, as we have created a very great relationship with the surf club that allows us to stay for the night in their space. Without them we wouldn't have been able to have this camp and for that we are greatly thankful. Once we made it to the surf club, we collectively sat down for a briefing on the day ahead of us before meeting Kev, our local surf instructor from Torquay Surf Academy. Kev helped us by not only teaching us for the two days of our camp but also by supplying us with gear and wetsuits for the surf. He was a bright beam that led many of our team to success in the first hour of our swim! As a group we touched on the 4 p’s (patience, positivity, perseverance and participation), setting goals for ourselves as we learnt the many steps to moving forward and onto the boards. After the intensive 2 hours of our first surf, we all were able to settle in and have nice warm showers before setting our minds to a local walk at Bells beach. Once having this refreshing view, chats and karaoke, we headed back to the surf club thinking of the preparations for dinner. The group did a great and tasty job, having everyone pleased with their accomplishments for the day. Ending off we played some rather intensive games of werewolf and wink murderer, that left everyone a giggling mess, before headed off to bed to prepare for the next full on day.
On Friday the 11th we started with an easy morning, some joining to watch the sunrise across the beaches we stayed by. After this we had a slow wake up, everyone enjoying some kind of breakfast before we prepared for an early surf lesson by the one and only Kev. This day led us to more victories and frustrations, however, regardless of where the individuals stood everyone was supported and motivated to continue on in their path of succeeding. With the day coming to an end, we headed back to the surf club to have another shower and prepared ourselves for the trip home. Everyone was eager to take part in the clean up and did extremely well in that regard. Nothing was left untouched and no one left behind as we relaxed on our way back to Melbourne.
This was an extremely successful and eventful camp and everyone should be proud of their accomplishments this week regardless of their size of impact <3
