HUME WEEK 5 TERM 4 2022

Well hello everyone! Quite an active week :-)

On Wednesday the 2nd of November our team had a full day, with both a bike ride and TAFE tour at Kangan Batman. The bike trail through Broadmeadows was a challenge, having our group standing with a variety of biking skills and working together through a hilly but beautiful path. This tested our 4 p’s, patience, perseverance, positivity and participation. Promoting these values as we went, multiple of the group displayed great leadership skills as they led the group through the challenging ride. After this we headed over to our friends at Kangan Batman, where we were taken into an in depth tour of their animal studies, hospitality and construction learning spaces. These activities gave the group a sense of achievement and a space to practice their 4 p’s (Biking), and an introduction to a potential future learning space, as well as a variety of career opportunities.

On Thursday, due to weather conditions we had to shift our original plans of canoeing to an informational session on respectful relationships and a game of bowling. The topic of respectful relationships is one we value in our program, aiming at talking about present issues and topics important to the young people of today, including understanding the LGBTQIA+ and values and their parts in relationships, including partnerships, friendships and family. After gaining a rather intense discussion on these topics we decided to reward the group with a group bonding bowling battle! This intense match took all our efforts as we sure had a lot of laughs along the way.

On Friday we went to meet our good friends down at South Melbourne Surf Life Saving Club. With the help of Rhys, our friendly and qualified Lifeguard, we were able to understand the impact lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers have on our community. Additionally we got to go over the important steps of first aid, and CPR, giving our crew a time to practice these very steps in real time. This training earns the crew members their own CPR qualification, giving them real life skills they can take out into their futures. We also played a variety of games that tested our endurance and teamwork, that real lifesavers and lifeguards use to train. Finishing this day off we had two games of beach volleyball, testing our teamwork skills in the warm but slippy sand.
