Hume Week 8 2017

We've just finished our final week of the program for the term! We had a great week celebrating the successes of all our students and we hope they're proud of everything they've achieved.

Wednesday started off with a careers information session at Kangan Institute in Broadmeadows where the students got thinking about jobs and careers for the future. The session provided the students with a lot of knowledge about what kinds of work and training is out there, and what is available to all the students in terms of VCE and VCAL as well as uni and TAFE courses. The students then went into a one on one interview with the careers advisor at Kangan and they all were able to map out and receive information about future studies in careers and trades they are interested in. After a quick bite to eat we were off to the Maribyrnong Youth Boxing Gym for our last session with Sal. The students were put through their paces and were extremely exhausted by the end of the session, however, all the students have loved all their boxing sessions because Sal has taught them respect, determination and to never give up on anything in life and that everyone can achieve anything they put their mind to.

Thursday was our celebration day! We spent the day together back at Roxburgh Park Youth Centre where we all met for the first time at the start of the term, instead today all the students were reflecting and writing their speeches for graduation day tomorrow. The task was for all the students to recount their experience and feelings towards a range of activities on the program. These were done exceptionally well and were insightful and reflective. We then had a pizza lunch and had a discussion about all the memorable, funny and challenging moments we all experienced as a group this term. Following this we spent the afternoon with a group of students from the Collingwood English Language School. You may remember a few weeks ago our students spent the morning repairing donated bikes, and today they donated them to these students. Along with the bikes our students delivered some useful info about bike riding, safety tips, and some practical lessons as not all the students had ridden a bike before. It was a great afternoon and both groups of students got a lot out of the experience.

Friday was graduation day- something we've been working towards and looking forward to for a long time. The students all delivered heartfelt speeches about one of the activities they enjoyed on the program and gave insight into how it has influenced their time at school and in the future. After watching the term video, students were presented with their graduation certificates, reports and an Operation Newstart jumper.

On behalf of all the staff we’d like to give a huge thank you and congratulations to our Hume students for all their achievements and commitment over the term. They've done so much over the last eight weeks and we're really looking forward to checking back in with them next term to see how they're travelling at school.
