This week on the Operation Newstart program was a great way to learn more about what our local area has to offer, in particular the local council Youth Services. We started off the week on Wednesday by visiting the Northland Youth Centre. This is a really great space outside Northland shopping centre in Preston where young people can use the facilities and meet youth workers. Paul who runs the space gave us a run down of what's available and when young people can drop in and
Hi all! Welcome to the first blog for our Term 1 program! Although it's a short term, it's going to be jam packed with activities, and at the end of the first week we're already into the swing of things. We started off the program at Yarra Youth Centre, where we played a few ice breaker games and started to get to know each other better. After the students were feeling more comfortable with each other, we formed a group 'code of conduct'. The students all voted to decide the
In term 3 2015, the Enhance students spent time learning about different issues within our community, before deciding as a group what cause they could support (and how). After an inspirational visit to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, the students made the decision to support the foundation and its Buddy Bag program by fundraising. On Friday 4th December, we held the Term 4 Operation Newstart Graduation Ceremony at Eltham YMCA Leisure Centre. It was a wonderful morning spent celebrating the achievements of the seven young people who attended the program this term. While there were many challenges along the way, each individual gained a number of new skills and achievements, which we hope they can continue to use in the future. The Graduation was facilitated by Operation Newstart Victoria's Executive Off
It's camp week! At the end of the program we always have a final camp, where students can put to use all the skills they've learnt. They are also assessed during this time on areas such as team work, attitude, organisation and leadership. There are plenty of opportunities to display these qualities and focus on how we have grown as a group over time.
Our busy week again started at the Eltham YMCA. The students are really comfortable with the gym now and have a good understanding of the different services available. Physical exercise is important for a range of reasons and getting to know local facilities can be really beneficial for young people wanting to do more exercise but not knowing where to start. After our morning at the gym we headed over to Banyule Bike Hub in Heidelberg. This bike hub is a great service run by
Once again we started off the week with a session at the YMCA with Jordan. We played basketball and worked through a range of different exercises at the gym. This great session was followed by a visit to JETS music studio in Bundoora. The studio is run by Banyule Youth Services and provides hight quality facilities for young people in the area. Our group of students were given a tour of the space; which includes rehearsal rooms, recording equipment, a green screen room, DJ eq
