Week 4 of our program started off with the group heading to our final session at Headspace in Broadmeadows. We did a range of activities such as bingo and also making our own stress balls in order to increase the awareness of all services that are available to them and all young people, their families, friends and the broader community. It was a great interactive session that encouraged all the students to access support at headspace if they need to. After this we headed off to a gruelling gym session at the Leisure Centre. All the students powered through a circuit workout which consisted of 8 exercises and all the students had to do each station for 1 minute 3 times. The students were extremely exhausted and the exercises put everyone through their paces. It was a great way to end the day all the students put in an excellent effort and gave the workout everything they had, it was safe to say the students were all extremely exhausted after the session. To end the day we stopped into the Library for some down time and for all the students to continue with writing their journals.
The rest of the week saw the beginning of our Surf camp, we had a few students sick and due to this there were only four students we all still had a fantastic camp and everyone had a great time. We headed down to Torquay for the rest of the week. We're lucky enough to be able to stay in the Bancoora life saving club for the night, which has heaps of great facilities as well as the perfect location to the beach for surfing! After lunch on Thursday we met our instructor Kev, put our wetsuits on and headed out for our first surfing lesson. The waves were perfect and after a quick demo on the beach we were straight out onto the water. It was impressive the effort all students put into perfecting their technique, with everyone getting to their feet on the first day! There was plenty of time in the afternoon to head into the shops in Torquay as well as driving down to check out the world famous Bells Beach, before heading back to camp to cook dinner and relax and kick back with playing plenty of pool, watched the footy and the boys even played murder in the dark and were greeted by a friendly ghost soon to be named Joanne.
Our last day of camp started fairly early with bacon and eggs for breakfast before another surf session. Despite the water being a little more challenging and cold today everyone remembered what they'd learnt the day before they were all eager to get out on the water and had a really great session, making the most of all the time. All the students got up standing on many waves, even on one wave all together. While this camp is in some ways much more relaxing than our others, the surfing itself is very physically demanding and requires a great deal of perseverance, strength, determination and patience. All of our students did incredibly well and should be very proud of their efforts, the students gave surfing everything they had and were having a great time.
